Talking Globe

Talking Globe

Talking Globe is something of a modern, interactive geography textbook. It is covered with a convex, tactile layer with coloured sub-printing and attached to a base, which houses the electronics and control panel with buttons for loud/quiet, stop, speech off, mode. A headphone socket is located in the base. Under the plastic surface of the globe's bowl are 122 sensors. Bringing a hand close to them, triggers speech synthesis and information about the objects being viewed from the speaker. Approximately one hundred pages of text in Word format are stored in the operating memory installed in the electronic map system. When a finger is placed close to the outline of Poland, the following data can be heard: the country's capital city, the area of the country and its population, the administrative and national divisions, the largest rivers, lakes, the highest mountains, the national anthem, etc. The colourful sub-print of the globe is a map of the country. The colour sub-print of the globe is a physical and political map of the world, and the tactile, highlighted layer of the globe includes: land surfaces with differences in level, capital city markings, country boundary markings, selected river markings, zero meridian and other meridians, equator and parallels markings, Braille markings.

Altix has produced this innovative Talking Globe, an indispensable teaching aid for geography. The globe solves the problem of the limitations posed by braille, tyflographic maps, on which only a strictly defined, rather small amount of information can be included.
